About Me

Pensacola Beach, FL
I live on Pensacola Beach, just past 23 ave. Most of the time there is swell I'll be surfing, but I'm going to try and take more pictures for this site. I just moved here from tampa so come introduce yourself if you see me shooting or surfing. I can also email you better quality pics.

Long time no see.

Hey guys, I don't know if anyone even checks here anymore, I kinda took a hiatus from reporting and pictures for awhile.  I got in a real surfing mood the past few months and have surfed every chance i could.  Might have to do with not being so cold.  And with the new pensacolasurf.com updating multiple spots multiple times a day and surfsmooth reporting I have decided to move away from reporting and just post pictures here. However you may see the occasional educated guess if I happen to see something different than the other guys.  That being said,  I took a bunch of pics sunday at the pier when it was big and side-offshore after I was wore out from surfing. I haven't had any time to edit any of the pictures but I figured yall would want to see them.  If I have a picture of you would like let me know and I'll work on it and email it to you.  Here's some notable pics from the day and the rest can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/110834664940916101410/DebbySundayPier#

Waves look like they could be really fun. Light winds out of the east for now with waist to chest high waves on the east pensacola beaches. Just needs the right sandbar as the one I saw was absolutely dumping but not really rideable.  Hope it lasts all day.

Monday Morning

Actually looks a lot more in control out there than I expected.  Only looks about chest high with 12-15mph se wind but the form didn't look too bad.  I think the low tide is keeping all the little choppy waves out.  Anyways, I think we will see a definite increase in size as the tide comes in, bringing with it the larger waves (6ft) that I'm seeing on the buoys and letting those waves make there way across the outside sandbar without losing all of their energy.  Should be a fun day if the wind doesn't get too crazy.

Friday Forecast

ladies and Gentleman,

It is still flat out but an absolutely wonderful day to be at the beach.  Thats where I'm gonna be after this work day is over.

Saturday sees building swell throughout the day up to chest high.Sunday sees chest to head high waves that continue through Monday.   These waves will be accompanied by a moderate SE wind.  Tuesday sees continuing chest high + and we might see the winds drop off in the afternoon for a super fun session.  Small waves around thigh/waist high on wednesday.

I am still trying to find a decently price longboard, it can be a beater or whatever. I want something to teach my friends on and to play around on the small summertime stuff. Shoot me some pics and a price and lets figure something out.  bkurth@stetson.edu

Also, a plug for Flomotion,  a Florida based surf apparel company.  They have a shipment of shirts and stuff on the way to Innerlight  as we speak.  I went to school and am good friends with the group of guys that surf and  are following their dreams and trying to make it big.  Check out their website @ theflomo.com  and give them some support.

I'll be out with the camera starting saturday afternoon.

Crap I haven't posted in forever.  Thats what being busy and fishing all the time will do. Along with the lack of waves lately.  And I don't really see the need to chronicle the tiny SUP bumps, not my style, I'll leave it to surfsmooth.  However we do have waves coming in the near future. Saturday and Sunday chest + with waves dwindling through the early part of the next work week. I'll try and get out with the camera, its been too long.

Friday

Around chest high at best sandbars and the wind is already blowing S at 14mph with a big line of storms headed our way.  Light winds behind the storm line though so maybe after it passes we'll have small wave fun.

I'll be out of town again all weekend through wednesday, but it looks to be flat after tomorrow anyways.

Thursday

Well, from what I saw, the waves are still choppy, the wind has died a little and it doesn't look as out of control as yesterday.  That being said waves are still choppy in the head high range with a kickin 15 mph SE wind that is forecast to increase as this slow moving front approaches. It will bring rain and more wind to the area later today and for the next day or so.  Waves slowly on the decrease tomorrow.

Wednesday

Already a big choppy mess, and forecast to get windier.  Around head high but with winds anywhere from 15-25 mph already I'd say its gonna be pretty choppy.  But... it is spring break, and it will be sunny and warm so I guess it might be doable.  Yesterday afternoon was weird because of the non tide, it would break really good for like 20 minutes and then there would be a 40  minute period of two much water, whitewater rolling through from the outside, and just a general mess, then it would get good again.  Anyways, have fun, be safe.

Still looking for a beater board over 8 ft to teach people on. Let me know

I'm Back

Around waist high out here on pensacola east beaches and on the up and up.  Should be chest high + by the end of the day.  Buoys are already 4.6 ft @7 seconds.  ITs beautiful out and the high is around 80 something today but the wind is forecast to blow pretty hard today and tomorrow.  But its warm, spring break,  and there are waves so no complaints here.

Try and spread out, if you are learning or new, can't deal with crowds(i.e. can't duckdive, avoid other paddlers), please go surf on the beach somewhere and not our local popular spots.  They are already crowded enough as it is, and it is exacerbated by the spring break crowd.  That is all

Real small stuff with light N winds.

I'll be headed to the East coast tomorrow through Sunday.  Looks flat over here though with waves starting to build monday late and tuesday and getting pretty good sized and windy throughout the week.

Wednesday

Its pretty calm out there, like oil slick calm with low clouds and fog that are supposed to burn off in a couple hours. Waves looked pretty small but had potential to be fun on a longboard at the right sandbar.

PS, finally don't have to be in a wetsuit anymore. When the sun was out yesterday I put in two good hours of surf with boardshorts and a 2mil top.  Stoked

My apologies for the lack of consistent updates the last two weeks.  Things have been pretty hectic at work, trying to get in early, and I had company coming and going.  The report and picture taking is back online now though.  Currently winds are light ese, with lots of fog and I would say waist high waves.  I would guess it will just continue to get smaller throughout the day.

Thursday

I would say around chest high with + sets. E wind around 10, but it didn't seem to be messing up the form too much.

Forecast holds through mid next week with waves of varying sizes from day to day, but all rideable. Saturday looks to be the smallest.

Bk

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

VAS conditions around chest high, kinda hard to say size because its not really breaking like a wave you would want to ride. Should build all day, just gotta find a window of good wind, and be ready to paddle.

Waves for basically the next week, except for saturday, where we'll probably have a small longboard wave.

BK

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Waist high , super choppy, super windy, should be building all day and tomorrow and continuing through the week. Just gotta find the right combos of wind and tide.

Sunday 2-26

1pm update, definitely building, about waist to chest with strong ese winds, kinda cold out there.

Friday, February 24, 2012

Fun Friday

Waist to chest out back, feathering on the outside bar and sometimes rolling through.  Winds sw around 10 forecast to increase throughout the morning.  Looked like some drift to the east, but not nearly as bad as last sunday.

The front is slowing down but we are looking at some storms around noon to one before the winds go offshore somewhere in the early afternoon.  Right now the waves at both the near and far buoy are around 5 ft 7seconds and on the increase, hopefully they get bigger as the winds pick up in advance of the front.

Quick tip of the day, spread out. Last sunday afternoon I checked almost every avenue and beach access on pensacola beach, the best waves I saw and surfed were nowhere near the normal spots where everyone bunches up.  The sand moves and so do the sandbars.  So get out there, find a sandbar, and spend some time in the green room to start your weekend.

2-23-11

We have some small and inconsistent waves out there this morning, up to waist high if you need to surf now, but the wind is blowing pretty hard out of the SW. Look for continued wind and building waves throughout the day. The wind should keep blowing until tomorrow midday when it switches to the NW and begins to clean up.  Start the weekend early I guess.

Finally Friday

Well yesterday didn't pan out as expected.  Only was around thigh high at best, the wind just died and swell never built.  I actually was about 8 miles out in the Gulf deploying some equipment and I knew there was no way it was going to get to chest high, too bad I didn't have any service so I could update from my phone.

Today its flat and will be all day.

Saturday  has a 90% chance of rain and should see building SE swell and windy conditions up to chest high in the afternoon.

Looks like yesterdays out there guess for Sunday  might just pan out.  We should wake up to head high south swell, swinging to the W, and an offshore windswitch just after noon.  Could be really fun.

In the long term, looks like chest high-ish surf for next tuesday and wednesday with choppy conditions.

Still looking for a longboard or a 5-8ish LOST ROCKET. CASH or TRADE

Rainy Thursday

This morning the waves are pretty insignificant, but there are a few small ones out there in the rain.

Waves might build this afternoon into the waist high range with South Winds.

Tomorrow sees micro/mostly unrideable waves with offshore winds.

Saturday starts flat and then builds up to chest+ by the late afternoon/overnight with strong onshore winds.

Sunday might have a little something left over from Saturday, just depends how hard the wind blows overnight and when the wind switches North in the morning, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say it will be pretty good sunday morning when the wind switches.

Next week sees building swell on monday afternoon that continues throughout much of the work week.

2-15-11

Probably around thigh high, occasional lucky waist high set, wind is kinda side offshore, ene, around 10. Definitely something to play on for the bigger boards.  Forecast coming later.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Rainy Tuesday

Didn't actually see the waves except what I could see from the road driving to work.  However there are waves, I would guess chest to head high and kinda choppy.  The Orange beach buoy is actually up to 8 ft, which I thought might be an error, but looking at the overnight data looks like its true, maybe slightly embellished.  The far pensacola buoy is at 5 feet, so throughout the day we are probably going to see head high waves until dark.  And then the wind turns offshore. Guess were just unlucky.  So get out there and give it a go. Did I mention its raining, but its gonna clear up later on, drive safe.

Still looking for someones longboard that they don't want/use anymore, so I can have something to slide around on during the summer. Cash or trade photo session.

BK

Monday, February 13, 2012

Monday

Still flat and really cold. Thats looking to change late afternoon today and into tomorrow.  Might get up around knee high this afternoon, and then  tomorrow we see building waves into the chest high range maybe+ before dropping overnight and then picking back up again on thursday. Thursday sees a better chance off offshore winds during daylight hours but the swell will probably be smaller. We'll have to wait and see.

Still looking for a used longboard to play around on, I know someone has one lying around they never use.
I'd gladly buy it or maybe trade a half day photo session or something. Email me and we'll work something out.

There are definitely still waves, and the conditions should be good. Whether they are good now or will be later is hard to tell. White out fog conditions out here on the beach, can't even see the water from the boardwalk.  But I can here the waves and the wind is calm and forecast to blow light offshore in a little bit.  So spread out find the right sandbar and have fun.

Its absolutely glassy out there, too bad the waves are pretty much gone.  Knee maybe a lucky thigh high at better sandbars.  There was a little crew of longboarders out at the cross so they must be getting something.

In the near future, look for waves to drop especially with the high tide this evening, and into tomorrow, before building up to chest high Friday afternoon and Chest high + saturday, with wind dropping along with waves on Super Bowl Sunday.

See yall out there

Tuesday

Looks about waist+ out there this morning on Pensacola East beaches. Mostly cloudy out here right now and supposed to clear up some this afternoon with temps up to 70. Wind is currently E@10 switching to SE as the day goes on. Local Buoys-  Orange beach 4ft, Pensacola-5ft.  Slow rising tide all day, water temp isn't all that bad really.

More detailed forecast later today once work slows down.

At least its Friday

Don't get me wrong there are waves out there, just didn't look very appealing.

Pensacola East beaches looked around thigh high.

Pier was waist high with + peaks and sets. Just didn't have the form I was looking for, instead of well groomed, it was just all dumping at once on the sandbar, no sandbar amplification, and the only surfing was going on on the right side of the pier.

If it were me I 'd park myself on the left side all alone, and just hope for one to come through, hit the sandbar right, and stand up along that bar.

Thursday

Didn't see it but based off the winds (se10-15), the buoys (4.3ft and 5.6 ft), I would guess its around chest high and kinda choppy. Be safe out there today there are some mean storms looking  to roll through later.

Link to pictures from last night below.

Unfortunately, the wind is now forecast to switch out of the NW around 1 am tonight, so I guess we'll just have to see what is left tomorrow morning.

Wednesday

We have unrideable conditions out here at the beach this morning but that looks to change in the near future.  We have E winds here but out in the Gulf its blowing ESE hard.  Look for waves to rise into the possible waist high range by late this afternoon, staying around chest to shoulder high Thursday, before winds go offshore at daybreak friday, cleaning up the swell and bringing it to a close.  Models also show more waves monday and tuesday of next week.

Quick hint, looks like the swell will stick around until Saturday in Panama city with there winds going offshore on saturday.

Lastly I have some pictures from this weekend I still need to put up, nothing special, but I'll try and get that done this evening.

1-24-12

Down here on the beach we have pretty clean conditions at around thigh high with NNE winds at around 10 mph. That wind will continue to blow, causing the waves to undergo a slow decline. Wednesday- Waves begin building again tomorrow, up into the waist high range by dark.  Thursday sees shoulder high waves with strong South winds before a wind shift Friday morning that will result in clean, if a little windy conditions, in the morning before going flat in the afternoon.

Bk

Monday, January 23, 2012

Monday Morning

Waves are still trying to hang in there at about thigh to waist high on the beach, form is pretty bad though and its crossed up because of the wind and small side chop waves. Just pretty disorganized. Look for improvement later this week.

bk

Foggy Sunday

We have whiteout fog conditions out here at the beach right now, which means no wind. However it also means I couldn't hear the waves. So I couldn't tell size, what I can tell you is that the far buoy was between3-4 feet overnight, and based on the sound of the waves and what I could see I would guess, thigh high with waist high sets, probably more fun for the bigger boards. Look for a good sandbar and go

bk

Friday

Waves are back!Looks about waist high out back, form not that great because of the wind but I'm sure there are sandbars around that are working ok.  Size looks to stay the same throughout the weekend then dropping monday.  Then a major swell event is due in the latter part of the next work week. See ya out there

The forecast for this weekend is still flip-flopping all over the place, last night it had us at chest high saturday with very light north winds sunday and the swell slowly dropping.

A few teasers

Thursday January 18

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the sometimes hoped for and mostly dreaded North wind has blown it flat once again.  Out on the east beaches of pensacola it looks about knee high but not really rideable, and its cold.  The good news is that the waves will start to build friday afternoon and will remain in the waist/chest range all day saturday, and then dropping sunday.

I have pics from monday afternoon/evening, I just haven't had time to download them yet, but they are coming.

Tuesday Morning

Waist to chest high out on the beach this morning. Light to moderate sw winds, Incoming tide all day.

Form out on the beach is not that great,  its doing that thing where it starts getting wobbly right before it breaks.  Waves should continue all day although conditions may deteriorate later due to strong ssw winds.

Rain tonight and then small and clean tomorrow morning.

Thursday

Sorry for the late report.Had to start on a project early so I can surf this afternoon.

This morning around seven it looked like waist to chest high on the beach with winds around 10sw. Coming in in distinct sets and feathering on the outside bar.  Still sloppy and drifty though. Now the wind is above 15 out of the sw, just building the waves for this afternoon Look for this afternoon around three for the wind shift and find a good sandbar. Hope its not blowing offshore too hard.

bk

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Big Wednesday

I just don't know if its going to happen today.  Right now the waves are breaking on the outside, VAS at least head high if not bigger, hard to tell.  The wind is blowing full on W blowing the tops off the swells and the current looks like its running hard.  On my way to work I looked back towards the pier and there was a full on overhead set wave just detonating 3/4 of the way out the pier on the pilings.  This reminds me of the Saturday of Tropical Storm Lee, not much rain, just full on wind and waves that we should be surfing but can't.

Its hard to pin down if the winds will drop as different forecasts I use all say different things. Don't let my opinion influence you but I would say no for today, the wind needs to totally drop or change direction to clean up this swell, especially at this size.

However, as long as the swell sticks around, tomorrow could be good when the winds switch offshore in the afternoon.

If you want, leave some updates in the comments box below, don't have to be registered.

This has been another report on life as a gulf surfer,

Late night thoughts

Get this, after hovering around 3 feet all morning and then getting bigger this afternoon, the pensacola 120 mile buoy is at 10 ft at 8 secs, sse winds. That buoy must me right in the front line of storms right now. Maybe an error on the reading as its been around 7feet all evening.  Could bode well for tomorrow if we can get local winds to cooperate.

Tuesday 4

Strait VAS conditions.wind 25+ waves chest+. Not worth it in my opinion. Should be same size tomorrow hopefully the wind slacks in the afternoon. I'm itchin to try this new board

Tuesday Morning

No picture this morning as it looks about exactly the same size wise as last night.  We've got it all today though, winds out of the ESEaround 10mpph, fog over the sound, and a slight drizzle with more rain on the way. Unfortunately both buoys are only around 3-4 ft @7 seconds but hopefully this will improve throughout the day and give us shortboarders something nice to play on.

Stay safe watch out for lightning this afternoon when this storm rolls through.

Waves continue tomorrow in the waist to chest range out of the SW, maybe a semi clean up late in the afternoon.  Then another chance for waves early to mid next week.\

Thigh high short rides

Monday morning

And so starts a week hopefully filled with waves.  This morning it is a little bit bigger than yesterday but still barely rideable for longboards and not rideable at all for shortboards. Hopefully it will improve to rideable by this evening but with nearby buoys at 2.5 and 3ft at 5 secs I won't get my hopes up. Tomorrow should be around waist+, with wednesday and thursday in the waist to chest+ range.  There is also a possibility of offshore, or at least sideoffshore winds thursday afternoon.  Cya out there
